Gum Disease
Gum diseases (gingivitis), is a serious infection that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. Gum disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. It begins when the bacteria in plaque (the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth) causes the gums to become inflamed.
In the mildest form of the disease, the gums redden, swell and bleed easily though is usually little or no discomfort. It is often caused by inadequate oral hygiene and can be reversed with professional treatment and good oral home care.
Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. In time, plaque can spread and grow below the gum line and gums can separate from the teeth causing pockets that become infected. Eventually, teeth can become loose and may have to be removed.
Gingivitis can be caused by smoking / tobacco use, genetics, pregnancy, puberty, stress, medication, clenching or griding your teeth, diabetes, and poor nutrition.
It is critical to have your teeth cleaned and a thorough examination done twice a year, at minimum, and it’s critical that you do a thorough job at home cleaning your teeth twice a day.
The good news is that gum disease can be treated and prevented. There are numerous aids available, including special toothbrushes, toothpastes, rinses, and prescription medication. We can help you determine the best treatment method for you after we examine your condition.
